Why trail pacing is a blend

Nobody runs 100 percent of a mountain race. Not the mid-pack, and on the steep courses not the winners either. Strategic hiking on the climbs is faster over a whole race than grinding out a slow, expensive run up every hill, because hiking moves you nearly as quickly on steep ground while burning far less energy and sparing the muscles you need for the runnable miles. Every experienced ultrarunner plans around a mix of running and hiking rather than treating the hike as a breakdown. The honest question is never whether you will hike; it is how much, at what pace, and what that does to your average. That is the question this calculator answers.

How the math works

The blended pace is a distance-weighted average of your two gears. If you cover 70 percent of the distance at your run pace and 30 percent at your hike pace, the calculator weights each pace by its share of the distance and adds them together. This is exactly the napkin math trail runners do at aid stations when they are recalculating a finish estimate, done precisely and instantly instead of approximately on tired brains. Add a total distance and it multiplies the blended pace out into a projected moving time for the whole race.

Worked example: hiking 30 percent of the course

Say you can run 10:00 per mile on runnable trail and hike at 18:00 per mile on the climbs, and the course profile suggests you will hike about 30 percent of the distance. The blend is 70 percent of the distance at 10:00 and 30 percent at 18:00, which averages 12:24 per mile. Over a 50K, that works out to about 6 hours 25 minutes of moving time. Notice how much the hiking moves the number: your average is nearly two and a half minutes per mile slower than your running pace, even though you are running most of the course. That gap is why runners who pace a trail race off their road fitness blow up their own time estimates.

Choosing honest inputs

The most common mistake is entering a hiking pace from flat ground. Your hiking pace on real climbs is slower than your flat walking pace, sometimes dramatically so. As a coaching reference, 15:00 to 20:00 per mile is strong, purposeful hiking on moderate grades, and steep switchbacks can be 25:00 per mile or slower even for fit runners. If you have GPS data from a training run on similar terrain, pull your climb paces from that. For the percent hiked, study the course profile and be realistic about the late miles, when hiking tends to expand beyond the plan. When should I hike instead of run?

In long ultras, many runners also hike on gentler grades late in the race as a deliberate energy management move, not a failure.

How do I train my hiking?

Treat it like a workout, not a rest break. Do repeats on a steep hill or a stair climber with purposeful effort, hands on knees or poles if you use them, and track your pace so it improves over the season. Weighted pack hikes and long trail days with planned hike segments build the specific strength. Most runners can take minutes per mile off their climbing hike with a few months of focused work.

Is hiking 30 percent of a race normal?

Completely. In mountain hundreds even the elites hike large fractions of the course, because on steep terrain hiking is simply the efficient gear. Mid-pack runners at races with serious vertical gain often hike 30 to 50 percent of the distance. The runners who struggle are usually the ones who never planned to hike and improvise it badly.

Why does my watch average differ from this calculator?

The calculator gives moving pace from your two input paces and the distance split between them. Your watch average also absorbs aid station stops, gear fiddling, photo breaks, and GPS error on switchbacks and under tree cover. Budget stopped time separately when you build a finish estimate, especially for races over 6 hours.

Does hiking rest the running muscles?

Partly, and that is a real benefit. Hiking shifts load toward the glutes and away from the eccentric quad braking and calf loading that running demands, lowers your heart rate, and makes it far easier to eat and drink. That is why planned hike breaks can produce a faster overall race: the running you do between them is better running.
