How the math works
The energy cost of level running is nearly independent of pace. Run faster and you burn more calories per minute, but you finish the mile sooner, and the two effects almost exactly cancel. That single fact makes calorie math for running unusually simple: the cost scales with body weight times distance, and nothing else moves the number much. This calculator multiplies your weight in pounds by your distance in miles by a per-pound-per-mile cost drawn from laboratory measurements of running economy, a lineage of research going back to Margaria's treadmill studies in the 1960s.
The net cost is about 0.63 kcal per pound per mile. That is the extra energy running demands above what your body would have burned resting during the same stretch of time. The gross cost, about 0.75 kcal per pound per mile, includes that resting burn. The calculator shows both, rounded to whole numbers, and updates live as you type.
Net versus gross, and why it matters
Your body burns calories around the clock just keeping you alive. When a device or a chart reports the gross cost of a run, it is counting calories you would have burned anyway sitting on the couch, which means those calories get counted twice: once in your resting metabolism and again in the workout. For weight management, the net number is the honest one, because it isolates what the run actually added to your daily expenditure. Watches report something closer to gross, and then add their own heart-rate-based guesses on top, which is why the number on your wrist usually reads higher than the net figure here. Neither number is wrong exactly; they answer different questions. But if you are tallying an energy budget, use net.
Why this beats MET tables
Most online calorie calculators use MET tables, which assign an intensity multiplier to an activity and multiply by time. For running, that approach forces you to guess which intensity category you belong in, and the guess is where the error lives: pick the wrong row and the answer swings 20 or 30 percent. Because running cost per mile barely depends on pace, weight times distance sidesteps the guessing entirely. You know your weight and you know how far you ran; there is no intensity category to get wrong. Time-based math makes sense for cycling or swimming, where speed changes the cost dramatically. Worked example: a 150 lb runner over 5 miles
Take a 150 lb runner covering 5 miles. Net: 0.63 times 150 times 5 gives about 473 kcal. Gross: 0.75 times 150 times 5 gives about 563 kcal. That 473 net kcal is roughly the calories in a modest bagel with peanut butter, which is the grounding fact every runner should carry around: a solid 5 mile run buys one snack, not a free-for-all. It is why you cannot outrun a careless diet, and why the training benefit of running is a better reason to do it than the calorie burn alone.
The error bars, honestly
No calorie formula deserves more than two significant figures. Real-world cost varies maybe 10 percent either way with running economy (efficient runners burn less per mile), terrain, wind, and surface. And walking is not the same math: at easy speeds, the net cost of walking a mile is roughly half the cost of running it, so do not apply these numbers to walks.
