How the splits calculator works

Pick your race distance and goal time, and the calculator divides the race into mile or kilometer rows, showing the time for each split and the time on the clock at each marker. Road races use their exact lengths, so a marathon table ends with a 0.22-mile partial row clamped to your goal time rather than a full mile past it. Track mode works the same way in 400m laps: choose an event from 800m to 10000m and the table shows every lap split plus the running total, including the partial lap where the event demands one.

The table assumes even pacing within each half of the race. With even splits, every row is identical. With a negative split, the calculator holds one pace through halfway and a faster pace after it, and the math keeps the two halves summing exactly to your goal time, so the plan never quietly drifts away from the finish you entered.

Even splits or negative splits?

Even splits are the default for good reason: they are the simplest plan to execute and the benchmark every other strategy is measured against. A negative split, running the second half faster than the first, is what most strong races actually look like on paper. Choose the Negative split strategy and set a differential percentage. The first half runs that percent slower than your average pace and the second half the same percent faster, so the total still equals your goal. For most runners a differential of 1 to 3 percent is the sweet spot: enough restraint to protect the late miles, small enough that the faster second half is realistic. Larger differentials look bold on paper and rarely survive contact with mile 20.

Worked example: a 3:30 marathon pace band

A 3:30:00 marathon averages 8:00 per mile. With a 2 percent differential the plan is about 8:10 per mile through halfway and 7:51 per mile after. The cumulative column tells you the halfway clock should read a little over 1:46, so you can verify the plan at the 13.1-mile timing mat instead of doing arithmetic on tired legs. On the track, a 22:00 5000m is 12.5 laps at 1:45 per 400m; the table lists all 13 rows, with the final half lap clamped so the last cumulative entry is exactly 22:00.

Using splits as a pace band

The cumulative column is the part to take with you on race day. Use the Copy table button to grab a plain-text version and paste it into a note on your phone, or print this page and trim the table to wristband size. Write the cumulative times on a strip of paper, cover it with clear tape, and wrap it around your wrist: at each marker, compare the clock to the band. If you are more than a few seconds ahead of the printed time in the first third of the race, ease off before the surplus turns into a debt. GPS watches drift on tangents and under tree cover, so a band checked against course markers is often more honest than the pace field on your wrist.

Frequently asked questions

Why do negative splits work better than going out fast?

Running the first half slightly slower keeps you under your lactate threshold longer, so you burn fuel more efficiently and carry less fatigue into the late miles. Almost every distance world record from 1500m up has been set with even or negative splits. Banking time early feels productive but nearly always costs more time at the end than it saved at the start.

What split differential should I pick?

For most runners, 1 to 3 percent is the useful range. At 2 percent, a 3:30 marathoner runs about 8:10 per mile through halfway and 7:51 after, a gap you can actually execute. Differentials above 3 percent require a second half fast enough that most runners cannot hold it, and the plan falls apart. When in doubt, choose a smaller number.

How do I handle a hilly course?

Treat the table as a plan for effort, not for every individual mile. Expect uphill miles to come in slower than the printed split and downhill miles faster, and check yourself against the cumulative column at flatter sections instead. If the course is front-loaded with climbs, a small negative split differential builds in the cushion you need.

Are the track splits exact?

The math is exact for a 400m track: the calculator divides your goal time evenly across the laps, including the partial lap in events like the 5000m, which is 12.5 laps. On the track your real limits are start position and traffic rather than measurement, so the printed lap time is a true target you can check against the clock every 400m.

Can I use kilometers instead of miles?

Yes. The Split rows toggle switches the road table between mile rows and kilometer rows, and both use the exact race distance, so the final partial row is clamped to your goal time. Use whichever unit matches the markers on your course; races outside the US usually mark kilometers only.
